Recently the way selected messages are highlighted changed such that selected messages are now difficult to distinguish. For example, the screenshot below has two selected messages, one read and one unread.
this is related to thread #10556, which is worded more like a feature request than a bug report. Paragraph (1) in thread #10745 describes a nice solution to this.

There could be a simple improvement possible by adding a colored full height bar on the right *) of the selected message. The color red or yellow might be suitable because it would be clearly visible in light and dark theme.
IMHO there is a small space on the right hand side next to the time / star that could be available for this purpose.
*) The left should not be used because that would interfere with the miniscule account color block on the first line of the message.
