No nonsense! For “Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox” and for "Thunderbird: Beta for Testers: you have to make in-app purchases to have the full scope. Feel free to take a look at the Google Store for yourself. And, that’s exactly what it boils down to. You can call it what you want. Who you believe is another matter. In the end, we’ll both see what happens. By then Good luck
One of the Thunderbird for Android beta releases, the Mozilla team asked the testers to test the donation workflow. That’s the in app purchases setting as a permission. And it’s optional - you aren’t forced to donate.
Donating does not bring an extra tier of feaures or functionality either.
To the left: the new common inbox - bad
To the right: the old common inbox - nice and clean!
Hi there!
I really suffer with this new view. I’m not able to use it in a simple way, and the new overview is a bad user experience. Sorry to say it in this harsh way about layout.
I hope your developers will give me a really useful tool in my hands?
What features require in-app’ purchases? No mention of that at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.thunderbird.android
I am happy to admit a mistake when I am wrong. Please be so nice why the Inn-App purchases are between 5.50 € and 180 € and what you pay for. If you can explain this to me logically, I would be very grateful. Then I wouldn’t say anything wrong in the future. Thank you very much.
Where does that screenshot come from? I’ve never seen anything like that in the app, or in the app’s details in F-Droid, Aurora Store or the Play Store page I linked to above. Thunderbird and K-9 have both always been free (as in ‘free beer’ and as in ‘freedom’).
I have never been asked to pay for using any of the features in the Desktop or the Android app. And the latest version i can find in F-Droid and Aurora Store is 8.0. That screenshot say it’s version 8.1. Where did you download that from? If ti is trying to charge you, then I’m pretty sure it’s not the official release.
I would uninstall the version you have, and reinstall from Download — Thunderbird, F-Droid or Play Store
These in-app purchases are for donations. You can donate if you want. If you do, it says “thank you” and you go back to the app. This changes absolutely nothing in the app. Also, it is voluntary. You can donate if you want to, but nobody forces you to donate. It is just a way to say “thank you” to the developers. Donating doesn’t unlock anything. The app stays completely the same.
I mentioned donations earlier - that’s what the purchases permission is for.
Thunderbird on the desktop occasionally asks for donations. As a result, they are independently funded and have noted this in some of their social posts last year. They’ve been able to hire more and speed up development.
This is my first post on this site. I will write here where there are many posts.
I follow this forum and the Thunderbird blog and mailing list, and recently I have been feeling that the ego of one of the Mozilla people may have led to the current K9 specs and Thunderbird design.
I ran into a contributor to this forum on another social networking site who told me about K9 Mail and the email client that will replace Thunderbird and I started using it. The new email client is very easy to use and highly customizable, unlike K9 Mail and Thunderbird, so I have decided to part ways with K9 Mail, which will no longer be updated.
I haven’t seen any posts on this forum recently, so I wonder if everyone has switched to a new email client?
K9 Mail has been a great help to me. Thank you so much.
Last but not least, I wish you all the best.
i can agree. new layout is a disaster. put back the old layout or let it be choosable
etam, I did not expect a response from you and I apologize for the delay in responding.
When we changed K9 Mail to the current design, we wanted to release Thunderbird officially as soon as possible, and the article said that few people have multiple accounts on the same domain, so it seems that we prioritized the design, not the users.
Currently, Thunderbird’s rating on the Google Play Store is low and only a few people are using it. There was also an article that said that in order to improve their own reputation, they did not revert back to the original design even though it was opposed so much, and made this kind of user-neglectful design.
If K9 mail is not lost, I would like to use it, but if it will be only Thunderbird, I will not use it anymore.
Thanks for your reply.
I hope you find a good email client.
This new layout is comically garbage. This, and the decision to prioritize a big piece of real estate with nothing but a bubble with a letter in it over displaying time and date are epic UI/UX blunders. I hope that going forward devs can concentrate on providing functionality and meeting user needs instead of trying to copy eyecandy that just doesn’t work for this use case.
Anyone can reset k9-mail or Thunderbird on Android to version 6.09.

If the author does not get in touch and changes k9-mail to the old design, then simply comment negatively on Google Play Store.
In which world do you expect that to lead to an improvement?
cketti just does not care. Just look at his (non-)reaction to changes in the past. If you are “lucky”, you will get a condescending explanation on why you are using it wrong…
And before you ask: No, donating won’t help either. In cketti’s mind, you are not paying for anything. It’s a voluntary payment and he owes you nothing. Technically true, but considering that (according to his own blog) the donations were his single source of income and allowed him to be independent, that mindset is very dangerous. An employee taking their wages without any obligation to their employer’s wishes will sooner or later be let go. Thus, the (at that time) surprise announcement that Mozilla would hire him and take over the project was a feat, basically he sold them a sinking ship. The warning signs were there, but Mozilla thought that it would be cheaper than developing Thunderbird for Android from scratch. I guess they did not have the intangible costs in mind…? Or I’m just stupid because I wouldn’t have invested in K-9 and am still not seeing the benefits? (But I am happy with Fairemail and don’t regret moving on from K-9.)
I’m playing with Blue Mail right now. I’m liking it. It’s a shame, but this update makes K9 unusable.
They don’t care? Then, say goodbye to someone who has supported this app for well over a decade.
this is solved by settings. apparently any new programs are as if hellbent to not have any user configurable options at all. it’s very common. instead of pissing 50% users off with update 1 and other 50% with update 2, give them options so there are 100% unpissed users
new layout has issues. light blue default text. i want it configurable. also what’s with different star sizes in message vs list
many weird changes in new ui. have option to bring some of them back
no changes for me required, jusr have more options! so i can set them if needed. new folder layout is kind of good but there are issues. why accounts move around if i click on them? i have them colored but theu move. they also have best effort short names. i need to change those too
etc
have it all in settings. no need to piss off percentage of users whenever ui changes
