I have the same issue a list of the same 2 letters.
It takes several attempts to find the account, when guessing.
I’ll need to find a way to actually see the accounts so I can intentionally select the correct one.
If I can revert to the previous version, please tell me how.
If I cannot, well… I’ve been using K9 since Samsung 5 was new, I’ll miss if I have a move to another app.
Hmm… I’m missing K9 already, it’s not useful now.
Following these instructions New layout not OK - #47 by Zerobot I was able to revert back to the useful version 6.804, I ended up resetting all my account passwords, as I had to re-enter them into K-9, but it’s now a tool again, instead of used up storage.
I’d like to echo the sentiments of having the 6.804 UI, or a fork to the project.
Also not a fan. Over the years I’ve been accepting UI-Changes and most of them were fine and you got used to them.
But this one is different, I can’t distinguish my Accounts, as I have more than 10 that I use parallel. Multiple ones have the same letters, some have letters that don’t make sense to me.
I want to be able to see the full E-Mail before selecting an account. If this is not changed back in the next weeks, I will also do the rollback to an old version and disable updates.
I really like the app, but only for its productivity, I’m no 15 year old teenager who is using a smartphone for the first time. I don’t need nor do I want a fancy UI. If a new UI increases productivity then I will accept it and learn to love it, but this change is just a hindrance.
Currently K9_Ver6.804 is available for download from github and Apk mirror F-droid version.
Please stock up on K9_Ver6.804 as download links are attached to the strings from various places.
How to downgrade your K9 email
export your current K9 settings.
uninstall the current K9 Mail.
install K9_Ver6.804.
import the configuration file exported by K9 Mail.
enter the password for each account, and the account will be available.
check each setting all the way through and complete the downgrade to K9_Ver6.804.
Contrary to this posts negative tone, I love the new layout! It’s much easier to switch between multiple accounts. The colors really pop, the amount of new emails is easy to see and navigation is simplified. I distinguish accounts mostly due to their color. The 2 character abbreviation was already not useful beforehand, because I also have a few accounts with the same name. So a configurable abbreviation would be appreciated.
The “solution” is so simple and afaik it has not yet been suggested.
Every account has an “Account Name” (see General Setting) and an email address (deeply hidden in Incoming / Outgoing server settings).
My “limited” knowledge suggests that it might be much more simple to use the first two/three characters of the “Account Name” compared to digging in to the server settings for the email domain. The disadvantage of using the domain name is that the average user has little influence to change the domain name to his/her likings. The advantage of using the “Account name” is that it makes sense and should be easely retrievable, and it allows the user to influence the account letters by modifying the account name.
Something like “PRV Gmail”, “WRK Gmail”, “K9 Forum”, “EBY Ebay mails”, “AMA Amazon junk”, “SPM Spam receiver”. I had a look at my list of mail accounts and I see great oppertunities to apply this schema to my accounts list. Without any changes to my account names this would result in “Str”, “Goo”, “Bac”, M-n", “Web”, “Dic”, which all make sense to me.
Exactly! The old one was great, this new one is unusable. Thunderbird too. I’m ready to uninstall both of them and go to something else if something doesn’t give. I can’t use this one currently, it’s way too clunky.
Advising someone to downgrade the app because a newer version is unusable, is not reasonable. Newer versions get security updates, fix problems, etc. This one just happened to bring a new interface that no one likes. More reasonable would be to say, use it or find another email program. I’m evaluating a couple now. I’m hoping that they revert back to something closer to the old one, but if they don’t I’m gone.
I’m sure I’ll get used to the new interface like I have will all the changes to K9 over the years (anyone else remember the uproar when they added the old account name dropdowns? Or when the unified inbox was added - I still hate it, but I accept it now). However a few tweaks could help here.
Many of my accounts are dave@wherever so they all appear as DA in the list.
Allowing me to set the two letters used for each account, or even better allowing me to specify an image to use for each account will mean I know which account is which.
Although, ironically, even adding back the drop down we all hated when it was originally added would be an improvement right now.
I’ve been using K-9 mail for only a month or two, and I liked it a lot until this recent update. On first glance, I thought there was a major bug when I saw my folders for MyAccount1 listed next to the pill for MyAccount2!
Besides that, I have the same issues as everyone else. My 2 accounts are in the same domain, so the letters don’t help differentiate them. I don’t use avatars, so adding support for images will not make the situation any better for me.
For now I have uninstalled the update and reinstalled the previous version. I’ll stick with that for a little while and see what happens. I’m not optimistic that the UX will improve much, though. Since I’m such a new user, I’m not very invested in this app, so if it doesn’t improve, I’ll be searching for a new one.
Same here.
Changing the Ux only with proper requirements gathering, alpha testing with real end users (not the dev from other side of the floor), and providing backwards compatibility toggles should be considered best practice.
Way too often changes are introduced for technical reasons, ignoring customer experience at all. Not good.
After a decade of continuous usage I’m about to move on to a different mobile app for email.
(and I checked but the old 5.6 apk won’t install on this Android)
I have had enough. Voting with my feet.
I suggest that is the best protest because otherwise they"ll say you liked it because you stayed.
So don’t.
Yup it’s like throwing your favourite slippers in the bin. But admit it. The furry lining is shot and you can drive a coach and horses through the holes in the soles.
I totally agree with you! A few days ago, my search for a new mail app began. Even then it was clear to me that once the TB Android boot is up and running, it can no longer be stopped and it is only a matter of time until k9 is switched off and thus no longer usable. So you are forced to use TB and pay for the amount of k9. This also shows that after many users downgraded to older versions, they can no longer be found. It’s a pity, but I’m turning my back on k9 and will never use TB. Have a good weekend.
Nonsense. No-one is forcing you to pay anything. Both K-9 and TB for Android are open source: if they ever become closed or demand payment, then someone can fork the last free version.
