When I get (k9 v17.0 on Android phone) two messages, and read one of them, and then go back, it is still shown as unread. When I reload the content from the server via imap, it is then correctly marked as read.

The issue will be fixed in the upcoming v18 release.
Recent changes to the swipe behaviour have been rolled back and resolve the issue.
If your on the beta channel, you can test this early in v18.b04. See github #10771 and #10243
