K-9 Mail can decode UTF-8 just fine. Chances are the message body uses a different character set than the header says it does. Thunderbird contains some heuristic to pick the correct character set to decode such broken messages. If it doesn’t work Thunderbird still allows you to manually pick a character set.
K-9 Mail, however, makes no attempts to use a character set different from what is used in the message header.
