On both a Pixel 7a running Android 16 and a Tab S2 running Android 7 (I know, long in the tooth), I can select text but the text between the ‘handles’ does not get ‘marked’. This makes it difficult to tell whether I have selected the right text, especially when I am selecting multiple lines. I reverted the K-9 app to v16.1 on the Tab S2 and the problem disappeared.
The issue only appears when trying to select text in a new email. I often share webpages that I find on Android so that I can save the content on my laptop. Some URLs have a lot of tracking information at the end that I remove before sending the email - this is where I noticed the issue. I can reproduce it in the destination email, subject and body. I am able to select text and see it “marked” in emails that I receive on Android.
I believe the problem disappeared when I reverted to K-9 v16.1 but at the time, had not been aware of the conditions where this issue occurred. I found an old cellphone running V9 and can confirm that the issue did not appear in that release.
I’m having the same problem. It’s especially noticeable when trying to select text in a message header. Selected text doesn’t “highlight”. For me this only started after update to version 18.0 .
Same for several Samsung Galaxy devices, running latest Android.
I cannot reproduce this using K-9 Mail 18.0 from F-Droid on Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra running Android 16 in dark mode.
I also see this when I switch to Dark Theme, when I turn Dark Theme off, the highlighting disappears. If I leave K-9 open, I can watch the highlighting appear and disappear.
I also noticed that the “white on white” highlighting only occurs in editable text. If I forward email and select text in the forwarded part, it shows blue. If I toggle the forwarded text into edit mode, I am back to “white on white”.

No forum suggestions will fix the issue for you. It needs fixed in the code.
I can reproduce on v18 and 19.0b1.
- Apply the light theme.
- Open the message compose screen.
- Type some message text.
- Select some of the text.
- Text is highlighted white on white background.
