POP3 access to Compuserve mail

My desktop computer is my main email resource, using the versatile client The Bat! I have a ton of messages there from many years and several accounts. I use POP3 on the desktop, removing messages from the server when downloaded; I use POP3 on the phone, not deleting from the server, and generally run the phone downloads before the desktop ones. That way, I have the last one or two thousand messages, from my main account (Compuserve), on the phone, which is useful enough for day-to-day work. (I have the phone set up to BCC myself on outgoing messages, and have The Bat! set up to recognize messages from me and put them in the Sent folder instead of the Inbox.)

I have a new phone. I had been using Samsung EMail on my old S10e, but it apparently won’t work with my new Pixel 8a. Ideally, there would be some way to run it on the new phone, or transfer messages from the old phone to some client on the new one, or at least transfer the settings. (If anyone knows of a way to do this, please let me know, but I’ve given up hope.)

So, I need a new client, and everyone seems to like K-9. Great, I’m a long-time Who fan too. So I try to set it up using the settings on my old Samsung mail:
Email address:
User name:
Password: <password–I know that this is correct because I’ve confirmed it by using it for web access>
POP3 server: pop.csi.com
Security type: SSL
Port: 995
Auto delete from server: Never.

When I try to configure K-9, it tries to set me up with IMAP, so I have to do it manually:
Protocol: POP3
Server: pop.csi.com
Security: SSL/TLS
Port: 995
Authentication: Normal password
Username:
Password: <password, same as what works on webmail>
Client Certificate: None
(I presume that there’s a place to specify “Leave on server” somewhere later)

When I press “Next”: “Checking incoming server settings,” pause, then “Authentication error: The server returned the following message: -ERR[SYS/TEMP] Server error - Please try again later.” (I have done this “later” several times)

I’ve tried variations on the server name--pop.aol.com, pop.compuserve.com, and so on–either the same result or a timeout.

Any suggestions or help very welcome. And I haven’t even tackled SMPT yet…

It turns out that AOL (which Compuserve ended up as part of) has some sort of deal whereby there’s a password that’s specific to a mail app. Under the guidance of an AOL tech, I got a new password to my Compuserve account for my K-9 mail app, and now it works. My desktop mail app (The Bat!), Compuserve webmail, and my old Samsung Mail app also still work, too, with the previous password. Everything now seems to work, although I still don’t quite understand why.
