Outlook-Error in K9-Mail-App: User is authenticated but not connected

Hi everyone,

does anyone have a solution for the error message “User is authenticated but not connected” in the K9-Mail app for Outlook email accounts?
IMAP is enabled in Outlook on the web, and all the server settings are correct.

Thanks for your feedback.

Kind regards,
Martin

I don’t have an immediate answer, but some more information might help someone else to provide assistance. What device? What version of Android (or chromeOS if using a Chromebook, as I do)? Especially what version of K-9 Mail? The more information provided beyond just bare error messages, the more likely someone will be able to help. Thanks.

Do you have multiple email addresses on that Outlook account? Try signing in with one of the other addresses. Outlook is very particular about this. See outlook.com outgoing server fails when enterprise or educational accounts · Issue #9160 · thunderbird/thunderbird-android · GitHub for example, but it was fixed for Thunderbird for Android 14.

Sorry, you’re absolutely right. I was so frustrated that I forgot to include the details.
The problem occurs on a Samsung S25 (Android) running the latest software and the K-9 Mail app (current Google Play Store version 19.2).

No, I don’t have any multiple email adresses on outlook. Only one.

Does no one else here have the same problems as me?
Is the K9-Mail app working for all of you on an Android device?

K-9 Mail (20.0) works just fine for me on a Google Pixel 9 Pro (Android 16) with an IMAP account. No problems, so I don’t know how to address your issue. I don’t use Outlook, but over a long period of time I have gotten the idea that various clients do not always do well with it. It may be an issue with the latchup specifically with Outlook, not other servers, (I would not put that past Microsoft, who want to enslave you to themselves.)

I’ve now installed K-9 Mail version 20.0 on my Samsung S25 as well. Unfortunately, the issues with Outlook via IMAP still persist.
It is ONLY Outlook that isn’t working; all other IMAP email accounts work fine. Just not Outlook.
Am I really the only one experiencing this problem?

During my testing, TBA always displays the error “User is authenticated but not connected” when “Let devices and apps use imap” is turned off in outlook webmail settings.

If you get past the first error, You’ll likely hit the second one below which I can’t get past. “SmtpClientAuthentication is disabled for the mailbox”
