Manual checking for new messages takes up to 3 minutes

I use IMAP push notifications which works instant and reliably on home Wi-Fi. But on celluar connection that sometimes drops the push notifications aren’t that reliable. When I pull down to check for new messages (and the celluar connection is fine) it sometimes takes up to 3 minutes of the animated icon to finally reach the Fetching Messages (translated from non-English language) message. It seems as there is a connection stuck in some long timeout or so.

More details. K-9 version, brand and make of device, OS version, cell operator, connection type.

E.g., if you are on an IPv6 5G connection without Dual Stack or DSlite, and your MTA is solely IPv4, you loose a lot of time at your provider’s egress router. More so if it doesn’t put you on an per-session IPv4 NAT…

6.804, Google Pixel 8a, Android 14, T-Mobile, 5G (European fake one) or LTE.

It happens sometimes on the cellular connection only, never on Wi-Fi. After the long delay, any subsequent manual checks for new messages are instant again. I use the default 24 minutes IDLE renew. The 5G connection is IPv4.

Have you by any chance Google DNS or VPN active? (I mean the built-in VPN from Google in Android 14)

No. No VPN nor proxy. I can reproduce it almost daily. Would the diagnostic log help?

Yes, it’d probably help.

@tchara I have the log files. Where can I send them?

You can post the log through an issue over at the GitHub repo.

@tchara Done. Manual checking for new messages sometimes takes up to 3 minutes · Issue #8079 · thunderbird/thunderbird-android · GitHub

I can reproduce the issue every day.
