Last K9 Beta Release? How do I switch?

I just looked at the github release page and wondered: is K9 14 the last release?

There are currently only Thunderbird Beta versions. I’m confused: Why didn’t the K9 Beta app tell me about this so I can continue being a Beta tester?

What is required to switch? Do I need to install the new beta, export my config and import it into the new app?

Is there any way to export and import mails that are only present on my mail client but not on my server? (I gladly only used imap but disabled sync of deletion of messages in order to keep more messages around. so when my desktop syncs via pop3 and messages are deleted from the server from time to time, I can still search and read old messages)

So yeah I won’t loose any emails but others might if there is no option to export mails. Would adding this be a new beneficial feature maybe?

Also please add a message to the K9 client to inform/warn beta testers about this

K9 14 is the latest release.

If you use K9, you won’t be notified about Thunderbird beta releases because it’s technically a different app. There’s no in app notification about new releases.

If you installed TB beta through F-Droid, Play Store, Obtainium etc, they provide notification when updates are released. You can also receive notification using RSS feeds from Git-hub.

You can directly update an earlier beta with the newer beta, as long as it’s the same app (K9 v TB) and obtained from the same store.

You can have the production and beta version installed at the same time. Production releases don’t update the beta version and vice versa. K-9 and TB can also be installed side by side.

If your using the K9 production release, you can install Thunderbird beta side by side. You can directly import the settings from K9, or backup and restore the settings from a backup file.

No, there’s no way to import emails held only on the client. You would need to upload them to the server first.

Thanks for your reply

When is Thunderbird going to replace K9 going forward? (or is it ever)

Is there going to be another K9 Beta Release at some point (K9 16 or so) or is all development effort spend on Thunderbird Betas?

Is there a functional difference between Thunderbird 14 and K9 14?

There’s no functional difference between K9 and Thunderbird. They’re built from the same code base. Beta versions are released under the Thunderbird brand and would be functionally the same as a K9 beta.

Quote from Mozilla Support link here

What is the difference between K-9 Mail and Thunderbird for Android? They look the same?
In June 2022, K-9 Mail joined the Thunderbird family as the foundation for Thunderbird on Android. Since then, we’ve been updating both apps to give users the same solid experience, so it’s normal to notice that K-9 Mail and Thunderbird look and feel nearly identical. They’re built on the same code, and that’s intentional!

We’re able to configure which features are available in each app, so some features might be unique to Thunderbird if they are a better fit. For example, the import feature helps users move from K-9 Mail to Thunderbird, which wouldn’t really make sense the other way around. Over time, Thunderbird will gain a few unique features as we evaluate the best way to support our Android email users – including when it might make sense to consolidate our focus fully on Thunderbird.

I see,

wouldn’t it make sense to inform K9 beta testers from the play store via mail or in-app that the K9 Beta channel has been deprecated in April 2025 and testers are expected to switch if they want to run beta versions again and act as a tester? I for example had not known about this until now.

I mean getting all those testers to stay available as testers might be good for the future development cycle.

edit: I only get an error message when I want to mark your last reply as the solution

At present there are no plans to stop shipping K9.

@Zeroid Thanks for answering this.

We’ll look into getting information out to K9 beta users.
