K9 8.2 update pop3 Sent, trash, drafts folders missing

My K9 mail just updated from a 4-5 year old version to 8.2. My trash, drafts, and sent folders are missing. How do I enable viewing them in K9 8.2? Thanks

Welcome to the K-9 Mail Forum.

If you haven’t yet checked the assigned folders in your account settings, I would start with that.

I just went through all the account settings and I don’t see “assigned folders” ?

Make sure that you are in the right place by following these steps:

  1. Settings
  2. Choose your account
  3. Folders

You should see what remote folders are assigned to the special folders. If they don’t match your expectations, update them.

I don’t have those choices. Screen capture below from settings, my account, folders.

It should have more lines below what your image shows. Here is an example from one of my accounts.

Are you using POP instead of IMAP by mistake?

POP3 not by mistake

From my export settings:

POP3 is definitely by mistake if you want to use folders. Those require IMAP.

I don’t know if K-9 has ever offered local folders with POP, as I determined that protocol was unsuitable for using with multiple devices around twenty-five years ago. I moved to IMAP and never looked back.

If you can switch to IMAP, I strongly recommend it. If you can’t or won’t, you may wait to see if someone else here has experience with using local folders on modern K-9 with POP and can offer you another perspective.

I need the emails in my sent folder. My family all uses k9 mail 8.2 with pop3 servers. They all have inbox, outbox, sent, drafts, trash. Since my forced update to 8.2, I no longer have sent, drafts, and trash folders, but they all do.

Sounds like something went wrong. Maybe just backup your settings and then uninstall/reinstall K-9?

Will uninstalling and reinstalling k9 delete my sent folder data?

Yes, it will. However, I’m not sure how much can be done to still reconstruct it. I fear it already is gone.

That’s why IMAP is a much better choice for mobile devices. If the device breaks, the app breaks, the device gets stolen, you upgrade to a new phone, etc, you still keep your messages. In contrast, with POP3, they are gone.

So, I added another pop3 account to K9. It had all five folders. I then exported my account settings in K9, deleted my account, then imported my account. My account then had all five folders, but all folders would display error. See attached screen capture.

I then deleted my account again and entered my account info manually. All five folders appear and it sends and receives email, but all my sent emails are not their.

I have a “My Backup Pro” application and data backup from a month ago. I wonder if it backed up the database in the app folder? I will have to look at the zip file to see what files it backed up, and if they are there, can they be restored

I have no idea. You will have to try  Still, I really recommend switching to IMAP. POP3 mainly seems to be used by people who have used it since forever and did not check out the much better IMAP protocol

Hey, do you know me? :joy:

It took me many, many years before I finally switched to IMAP. I’m old and had the “never change a running system” mindset (I also continued to use SuperSU forever when everybody else was already happy with Magisk).

But IMAP is really soooo much better. I check my emails on the phone, reply if needed - and then pick them up with my PC where I move received + sent mails to (not synced) storage folders. That way I have them all backed up and won’t lose them if I flash a new rom or whatever. :+1:t2: :sunglasses:
