K-9 Mail 8.2 Release

Hello K-9 Mail users!

Our last Thunderbird/K-9 Mail release of 2024 has just landed on the Google Play Store, and should be landing on the F-Droid store within five days of our merge request being accepted.

So, what’s new in this latest point release? First of all, we have our initial updates to the account icons. We will keep working on the icons and account drawer in the new year, so there will be more changes and improvements. This is only the start, but we hope it helps with some of the frustrations:

  • Account initials now use the display name, not the domain, which means more customization and hopefully less confusion.
  • Account icons also stay in the same position when you select them.

Secondly, we have a more prominent link to our support article for Gmail login issues, for anyone who might be encountering them, especially on K-9 Mail.

The full changelog is available on our GitHub page: Release Thunderbird 8.2 · thunderbird/thunderbird-android · GitHub. We’d especially like to highlight the work of our community contributors, especially those making their first contributions in this release!

And you don’t have to be a developer to contribute! Answering support questions is one of the most important ways to contribute, and we’re thankful to everyone who helps answer questions here. If you have some extra time and energy, our Thunderbird for Android users on Mozilla Support can also use your expertise and help. We have a great Office Hours with Wayne Mery on how to get started on SUMO, as well as a guide on TopicBox.

For me, this was a bit of a backslide. I have 3 email accounts on different services. The previous version that everyone hated was still OK as they all had different 2-letter abbreviations. With 8.2, since the username is the same on all of them, I now had 3 identical abbreviations!! I had to go into settings to rename them as the account name defaults to the email address.

Sorry you had a bit of an opposite experience, and we’re glad you could at least rename the account to change the letters. This is definitely only the first improvement, and I know icons are on the mobile team’s priority list once they come back from the end of year break. But thanks for letting us know that for users like you, this change is only helpful with some work. That is still really useful feedback!
