Intermittent Wrong Notification Sound (repost)

I posted this in the wrong category and wanted to make certain the support folks saw it, so I am reposting it. (I don’t know how to change the category after being posted… sorry.)

*****

Two days ago, the OS was updated on my Samsung S22 running Android 16. K9 is also up to date, running 13.0.

I’ve got two email accounts on this phone with different notification sounds for each account. The first account is for normal email and uses a subtle sound. The second account is only used for receiving high importance or critical alarms from the systems I administer; it uses a more obnoxious and louder sound to get my attention.

Ever since the OS was updated, on an intermittent basis, the first/primary account will use the wrong notification sound… so a normal email will come in and it sounds like an emergency. I don’t see how this can be happening, but thought I’d ask if anybody else has reported this anomaly and if anybody has any suggestions for something that I can do to remedy it. I’ve tried rebooting the phone, but the problem persists.

I have some new information to share about this anomaly.

The notification sound for the second email account was the same as the System notification sound (Settings>Sounds and Vibration), so I changed the System sound. What I’m now able to hear is the Email notification sound (from either email account) plus the System sound. Sometimes I hear one or the other or both (they probably sometimes override each other).

This makes a bit more sense, since the change occurred after the OS updated. I hope this helps to better diagnose what’s going on.

Have you checked the apps other notification channels in Androids settings in case a sound has somehow been assigned to them. Those listed under miscellaneous or synchronise (push).

This was a good suggestion. I looked through the Settings>Notification>App Notifications menu to see if anything jumped out at me. The only thing that I saw, which I don’t use, is the Gmail app. I disabled it, but the problem persists. That Gmail app is only tied to the first email account I have configured in K9 (it knows nothing of the second email account).

I couldn’t find a miscellaneous category or folder in K9, and my Push folders looked the same as before… and to my knowledge, there’s only one place to set a single notification sound per account.

Again, the problem occurs intermittently for both email accounts that are in K9. I haven’t yet detected a pattern for when or why the System notification sound goes off. I can send myself several emails from my PC to either email account, and it’s hit & miss for when the System alert sounds.

If this isn’t where you had in mind for me to check for additional apps that could be triggering the System notification sounds, please direct me where else to look.

Hi @TPSchultz

If you long press on the K-9 launcher icon, you should hopefully see an app info option to select. From there, click manage notifications.

Alternatively you can access some of these settings in the K9 app via.

Settings > Account > Notifications .. Notification Categories

You should see “Messages” and “Miscellaneous”

Android 16 also made changes to how notifications sounds are handled, and there’s reports of at least one bug so I’d check your Android settings as well.

Thank you for your reply and screen shots.

My menus are somewhat different than yours, probably because I see you’re running a beta version, but I managed to find the Miscellaneous notifications menu you were describing. My version doesn’t have the Synchronize (Push) menu. That menu is used for setting the Errors and Status alerts, but mine is set to Silent, so that isn’t my problem. (I hope this screenshot comes through, as I am posting via an email reply from my desktop PC.)

Also, I looked at the Android 16 bug that you mentioned and it wouldn’t seem to directly apply. That one seems to be for a Pixel phone, and mine’s an S22, and in that bug, it seems that those folks weren’t getting any notification; I’m getting the wrong one (or the right one plus a wrong one).

I waited for a couple of days before replying to see if things would get better; they have not. On Friday, things acted normally all day. I thought that perhaps things had worked themselves out and all was better, but on Saturday and Sunday, the notification sounds were messed up again. So, I uninstalled K9, rebooted, reinstalled K9 and waited for some emails to come through. Intermittently, I would get the wrong notification or both the correct one and the wrong one. I then installed Thunderbird and uninstalled K9. Though I had read the two share the same code, I was surprised to see that they indeed both looked the same and had the same menus. The notification sounds being intermittently incorrect still persists.

If anybody else has any ideas as to what I can check, I’m all ears.
