Google is blocking K9 from accessing one Gmail account, but allows it to access another

Google has suddenly started blocking K9 from accessing my main Google account, yet it still allows K9 to access my Google account created for gaming. This started after I changed the password for the Google account that K9 is now blocked from accessing, despite changing the login info within K9 almost immediately. This is fairly annoying, as there seems to be no way to “unblock” K9 from inside the Google account.

Google no longer allows login with direct account credentials or app passwords. You must use OAuth.

If you have already set up OAuth and it does not work, check whether you have a personal list of secure apps defined in your Google account. Find K-9 and remove it from the list. After that, try setting up the account in K-9. Google will then ask wether you want to allow K-9 (with the new password of course).

Google decided K-9 Mail needs to be verified again in order to use OAuth. We’ve started the process, but it might take a while to complete. See Unable to login to a Google account · Issue #8598 · thunderbird/thunderbird-android · GitHub

It looks like some authentication attempts are blocked because of this, but not all of them. It’s unclear to me which accounts are affected and which aren’t. Thunderbird for Android still seems to work with Google accounts.
