Is it possible to configure K9 to handle LOGIN (instead of CRAM-MD5) authentication method ?

K-9 supports both “plain” and “encrypted” passwords. With earlier releases I believe they are labeled “plain” and “cram_md5”. In 5.8 they are labeled “normal password” and “encrypted password” respectively. K-9 also supports client certificates for authentication. There’s a pulldown to select the type that’s appropriate for your context. The “plain”/“normal” option is the default.
