How to use a Gmail/Google Workspace account with K-9 Mail?

No, OAuth is not available with POP3.

You can simply configure an IMAP account and change some settings to emulate POP3:

  • Disable “Upload sent messages”
  • Disable all special folders (archive, spam, sent, etc)
  • Disable push messages
  • Disable “Delete messages when deleted on server”
  • Select to only show the inbox, no other folders
  • Set “When deleting messages” to “Never delete on server”

Thanks for instructions!
I may try that. For now, my gmail is forwarding to my icloud email address.
I have to think about how to handle the interface on my Mac so I get mail on both devices.
Its complicated.

This is any difference in the data that google collects/receives when signing in using “Sign in with google” vs signing in with an app specific password?

A couple of things I want to know:

  • Does it receive the device’s IMEI number?
  • Does it receive any location data?
  • Any other device information does it receive?

\ Thanks

  • Depending on the algorithm, the OTP token generation can include the IMEI. The IMEI itself is not transmitted.
  • Yes, roughly. Your IP address is registered with a regional registry, so at least the vague region is known. Some registries, especially in the US, bind IPs to exact locations in street level. - You can try using a VPN if you don’t like that, but many states require VPN providers to send a “forwarded for” header.
  • Device type, operating system, local time, browser/app ID and version, as well as unique OTP token generation token.
