Are gmail messages stored in cloud on locally on device?

The last time I used K9 was in the pre-gmail days. I’d like to switch to it now but need to know if messages are stored locally on my laptop/phone or in the cloud. Space isn’t a concern now but it might be in the future, especially on the phone. Thanks.

Use IMAP, then the messages remain on Google’s servers.
